The state previously closed all public schools on Hawaii Island and most on Maui last week as a precautionary measure ahead of Hurricane Nolo. It is now heading west, away from the main Hawaiian islands.
Four Lahaina schools will remain closed Monday due to ongoing power outages, uncertainty surrounding the nearby Olowalu brush fire and concerns about reliable water service at the campuses.
The following schools are closed Monday:
HIDOE said Nolo did not cause significant damage to school campuses.
Some Hawaii Island schools experienced flooding, high winds and temporary road closures. Campuses have been assessed and indicate that schools are ready to reopen and roads serving affected communities are accessible, officials said.
On Maui, the department said power was restored to most affected areas, allowing a majority of schools to resume normal operations Monday. Widespread power outages remain in Lahaina, and Hawaii Electric indicated that inspections and restoration efforts have been affected by weather conditions.

HIDOE said that due to the Olowalu brush fire still active and the uncertainty of the power outage duration, it cannot ensure reliable water service at the four Lahaina campuses.
The department said it will continue to monitor conditions in West Maui and coordinate with county officials and utility providers to determine when the four schools can safely reopen.
HIDOE said families and employees are encouraged to monitor official department and school communications for updates.
