Hawaii receives $5M in federal funding for storm-damaged roads, bridges
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii is receiving $5 million in federal emergency funding to help repair roads and bridges damaged by the March Kona Low storms.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration announced the funding Monday for the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The money will help cover repair costs for projects including the H-3 Kionaole Road culvert and Hana Highway near mile marker 10.
Federal officials said a series of Kona Low storms beginning March 10 caused severe flooding and left roads, bridges and other highway infrastructure covered by water and debris.
Some roadways required reconstruction and reinforcement before they could safely reopen.

“The Federal Highway Administration is working closely with the Hawaii Department of Transportation to ensure that repairs caused by the Kona Low storms are completed as soon as possible,” FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster said.
The $5 million is being provided through FHWA’s Emergency Relief program, which helps states repair highways and bridges damaged by natural disasters and other catastrophic events.
Federal officials said the money is an initial installment, and additional funding may be provided as repair needs continue.
