Narcissus pageant empowers young women of Chinese heritage through cultural, leadership workshops

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii is welcoming applications for the upcoming Narcissus Queen Pageant, which offers young women across the islands a chance to deepen their connection to their heritage while developing leadership skills.

Contestant Search Co-Chair Laura Ho joined Hawaii News Now Sunrise Weekends to discuss the pageant’s legacy.

Unlike traditional beauty pageants, organizers emphasize cultural immersion and community building. Participants take part in free classes covering traditional arts, martial arts, lion dance, history, mahjong, acupuncture, and calligraphy, all taught by industry professionals.

“Classes like poise, speech, interview, a lot of things that can help girls to come out of their shell, gain confidence and also gain a lot of like personal, personal and professional development. And of course, most importantly, it’s a really great way to meet friends, make a lot of friends, gain connections, and also just network within the community.” Ho said.

Beyond cultural enrichment, participants form lasting bonds through months of shared training and community appearances.
