Delta flight from Maui diverts to Honolulu after fumes reported

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Delta flight from Maui to Seattle was diverted to Honolulu Saturday night after fumes were observed shortly after takeoff.

Delta said Flight 394 departed Kahului with 189 passengers aboard when the flight crew followed procedures and diverted to Honolulu.

After the Airbus A321neo landed, crews observed fuel discharging from the aircraft.

Passengers deplaned using air stairs and were taken by bus from the aircraft.

One flight attendant sought medical attention. Delta said there were no reports of anyone else doing the same.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people,” a Delta spokesperson said. “That’s why the flight crew followed procedures to divert to Honolulu when fumes were observed after departure from Maui.”

Delta said technicians will inspect the aircraft and the airline is reviewing what happened. It also plans to work with aviation authorities on any broader review.

The airline said passengers will continue to Seattle on another aircraft scheduled to depart Honolulu Sunday morning.

Delta is also issuing refunds and reaching out directly to passengers to apologize for the experience.
