Kuihelani Highway reopens after Maui firefighters battle brushfire
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Firefighters are battling a brush fire in Central Maui that temporarily closed Kuihelani Highway Thursday.

The fire broke out just before 3:30 p.m. in Waikapu, and the Maui Fire Department is at the scene.
Firefighters said they found a multi-acre area of brush and grass burning in the direction of Kuihelani Highway.

MFD said at around 4:30 p.m. ground crews and water drops from Air 1 halted the fire’s forward progress.

Officials initially closed both directions of Kuihelani Highway.
Kuihelani Highway and Waiko Road remain closed as crews fight the fire.
The Kahului-bound lanes were reopened at 4:30 p.m.
The Maalaea-bound lanes have also since reopened.
No evacuations have been ordered at this time.
No structures were threatened.
