State officials warn of property scam circulating in Hawaii
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State officials are warning the public about a property scam circulating around Hawaii.

Letters falsely appearing to come from the state regarding home warranties and mortgage protections have been reported, according to the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, or DBEDT, the Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority, or HGIA, and the Office of Consumer Protection.
These fraudulent letters reportedly reference the “Hawaii Green Infrastructure Authority,” or similar variations on that language in an attempt to appear legitimate.
The letters use a false sense of urgency to try to push homeowners into calling scam phone numbers to handle fake property issues.
The language in the scam letters use language about final notices, county clerk record dates, or supposed warranty expiration deadlines in order to pressure recipients into action.
The state is warning the public that these notices are scams that did not originate with any official Hawaii agencies.

HGIA does not issue home warranty products, and they will never request personal information through unsolicited mailers.
Anyone who may have received on of these letters is warned not to call any phone number listed and not to give away any personal or financial information.
Furthermore, HGIA will only list its official office phone number, (808) 587-3868, and its official email address, [email protected], in it communications with program participants.
Any communication that does not come from official channels should be handled with suspicion.
