Video sent to Hawaii News Now captured the violent shaking inside Randy’s Huli Chicken and Ribs, where shelves crashed to the ground as people rushed for safety.
“It was a hard jerk and then it sounded like a bomb went off,” said Randy Morris, owner of the business.
Morris said his warehouse sustained only minor damage, but his daughter’s home suffered major structural damage after the quake shifted the house off its foundation.
“just felt like I was on one of those carnival rides that like jerk your body,” homeowner Asia Morris-Silsley said. “sounded like the whole house exploded.”
As the shaking intensified, Morris-Silsley said her main concern was getting her children out safely.
“My mom tried to scoop me out of bed,” said Jahnoa Sisley, Morris-Silsley’s son. “I fell into a crack in the deck and my legs slipped right through.”
“The deck split in half,” Morris-Silsley said. “The house is on the ground. It jumped off of the foundation.”

Other residents also reported damage from the force of the earthquake, including fallen water tanks, cracked flooring and shifted property.
“the whole tank fell and hit the house and was dumping out the water,” said Jacob, a Hawaii Island resident.
Visitors staying on the island also described being caught off guard by the shaking.
“I came here for my birthday party, and it’s starting already with a bang,” said Tina, tourist from Sacramento, California.
Back on Oahu, some residents reported feeling light shaking and vibrating windows, though conditions were far less severe than on Hawaii Island.
As families continue recovering from the quake, Hawaii County officials say damage assessments are ongoing as crews respond to additional reports coming in from around the island.
