State works to reopen Lanai’s storm-damaged harbor by Sunday

LĀNAʻI CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) – State crews are working to restore Kaumālapaʻu Harbor on Lānaʻi after damage from Hurricane Lowell disrupted operations.

The island’s only commercial harbor was rendered inoperable after Hurricane Lowell punched a hole in the pavement, tossed containers into the ocean, and dislodged six jacks, according to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT).

The closure sparked panic buying for gas and supplies.

Transportation officials said crews began filling the sinkhole Thursday while side-scan sonar scans identified underwater hazards.

On Friday, crews will remove containers and debris via cranes directed by divers.

HDOT estimated the waterway should be clear and the harbor ready for operations by Sunday, Sept. 13.

Land-side repairs will continue after the harbor reopens to vessel traffic, officials said. Sinkhole repairs and resurfacing of the pier apron are expected to take seven days.

Transportation officials said the state remains in close coordination with Young Brothers.

The next interisland barge shipment is expected to follow the normal sailing schedule of Wednesday in port and Thursday departure, officials said.
