First Alert Forecast: Rain, high winds and big surf as Lowell passes

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Southeast to south winds will increase Monday night as the core of Hurricane Lowell passes just to the west of Niihau.

There is the possibility of hurricane-force winds for Niihau and Kauai and tropical storm force winds for Oahu.

There’s also a threat of short-lived, fast-moving tornadoes and waterspouts, mainly near Niihau and Kauai, as Lowell passes.

Heavy rain will be possible statewide from bands of moisture associated with Lowell. Some flooding can be expected.

Dangerously high surf generated by the hurricane will peak overnight for south facing shores.

Once Lowell passes, high pressure will build back in Thursday through Saturday, allowing more typical trade wind conditions to return. However, it will take a few more days for the weather to dry out.
