Flight suspensions underway at Lihue Airport as Hurricane Lowell approaches

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines suspended flights to and from Lihue, Kauai, at 11 a.m. through the rest of Monday as Hurricane Lowell nears the islands.

The Category 2 system is approaching the islands, and is forecast to bring hurricane conditions across Kauai and Niihau by Monday afternoon.

Alaska Airlines said the suspended flights include neighbor island flights and transpacific flights between Lihue and the U.S. West Coast.

“We will reassess the forecast and airport conditions in Lihue this evening to determine plans to resume flights tomorrow,” Alaska Airlines said in a statement.

Customers scheduled to travel to and from Lihue through Tuesday have the flexibility to change or cancel their flights without fees, the airline said. View the travel advisory here.

Southwest Airlines travel advisory

Southwest Airlines issued a travel advisory Monday indicating flights in and out of Lihue may be delayed and/or canceled through Tuesday.

Hawaii airports remain open

According to HDOT, all airports, including Līhuʻe Airport, will remain open unless unsafe conditions arise.

Travelers should check with their airline directly for information regarding delays, cancellations, or other changes before heading to the airport.
