High surf warnings, advisories issued for dangerous surf from Hurricane Lowell

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Dangerous and damaging waves are expected from Hurricane Lowell along the south shores of all islands, with massive waves of 20 to 30 feet anticipated for south shores of Kauai and Niihau.

High Surf Warnings have been issued for the south-facing shores of all islands through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

A High Surf Warning is also posted for the west shores of Hawaii Island. Surf of 6 to 8 feet is forecast through Monday morning, rapidly building Monday afternoon and evening to 12 to 16 feet.

A High Surf Advisory has also been issued for the east-facing shores of Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii Island for waves of 7 to 10 feet through Monday.

The high waves expected on Niihau and Kauai can send ocean water surging and sweeping over beaches, coastal benches and roadways. There could be significant damage to coastal properties and infrastructure, including roadways. Coastal evacuations and road closures will be possible.

Large breaking waves may affect harbor entrances and channels with significant damage possible to docks, piers, ramps, and boats. On Kauai, vulnerable coastal roadways from Poipu to Kekaha are susceptible to high wave overwash, with Lawai road at a particular risk for overwash.
