Hawaii Island police seek tips after woman’s decomposing body found along shoreline

WAIPIʻO VALLEY, Hawaiʻi (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaiʻi Police Department is investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose remains were found in Waipiʻo Valley along the shoreline.

According to police, Hāmākua patrol officers responded to the Waipiʻo Valley beach area at 12:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, after receiving a report of a body near the shoreline.

Officers located the body of a woman near the water’s edge in an advanced state of decomposition.

Due to the condition of the remains, the woman’s approximate age and race could not be immediately determined.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Investigators found no suspicious injuries and said foul play is not suspected. The official cause and manner of death are pending toxicology results.

Police are attempting to identify the woman through fingerprint database searches and DNA analysis.
