11-year-old seriously injured after falling from pickup truck in Volcano

VOLCANO (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Island police are investigating after an 11-year-old boy was seriously injured in a traffic incident in Volcano.

Police responded near the intersection of Maile Way and Alanui Iiwi Road around 7:34 p.m. Tuesday night.

Investigators said the boy was riding in the bed of a pickup truck that was towing a food wagon when he lost his balance and fell out.

Police said the boy was then run over by the food wagon being towed behind the truck.

He was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center and later transported to Kapiolani Children’s Hospital on Oahu because of the severity of his injuries.

The pickup truck and food wagon were recovered as evidence.

Police said speed and impairment are not believed to be factors, and no arrests have been made.

Investigators also reminded drivers that Hawaii law prohibits passengers under 16 from riding in the bed of a pickup truck.
