Kau recovery hub continues helping families weeks after Hurricane Lala

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – More than two weeks after Hurricane Lala, community volunteers in Kau say some families are still in need of basic supplies and recovery assistance.

The Kokua Kau Hub in Waiohinu has been distributing donated supplies from across Hawaii and beyond.

Organizer Mehana Kihoi said the grassroots effort began with basic necessities like canned food, baby items and toiletries, but has since shifted toward long-term recovery support.

“This hub is a 100% community-driven effort, and the supplies were contributed from all across Hawaii and beyond,” Kihoi said.

Available supplies include cleaning products, pet food, canned goods, propane and fuel.

Kihoi said organizers are actively collecting recovery-focused tools, such as brooms, floor fans and pressure washers.

New families continue to arrive for help, demonstrating that the community’s needs are far from over.

“We just had two new families come today, so it is telling us that there is still a need for the basic necessities and essentials,” she said.

The hub remains open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with food and water still available for families in need.
