HPD warns of new scam demanding fake ‘ankle monitor’ payments

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Scammers are posing as Honolulu Police Department personnel, and police are warning the public about the new scam calls.

According to HPD, scammers are posing as law enforcement officers and requesting payments for an “ankle monitor program” that’s required for their family member to be released from jail.

Police said scammers are asking for the money to be sent through apps such as Venmo and Zelle.

HPD encourages the public to take the following precautions:

The department said if anyone has already given out personal information or lost money to one of these scams, file a report with Honolulu police at (808) 529-3111 or online here.
