HFD, EMS warn hikers of dangerous trail conditions after storm

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Honolulu first responders are urging hikers to use caution on the trails in the days following severe weather.

The warning comes after a rescue Sunday night at the Makaua Hidden Garden Trail in Kaaawa.

Officials said a 32-year-old woman injured her ankle after slipping while trying to cross a stream. Because it was dark and she could not walk out on her own, she and her friends called 911.

Two Honolulu Fire Department units initially hiked in to reach the woman, but difficult terrain, dense vegetation, and muddy conditions forced crews to call in additional personnel with chainsaws to clear a safe path.

High winds also grounded HFD’s helicopter assets.

In total, four HFD units with 17 personnel and three EMS units with five paramedics and EMTs spent nearly three hours on the scene.

EMS evaluated the woman and treated her with an ice pack. She later declined transport to the emergency room, opting to seek medical care on her own.

Officials said swollen streams and muddy trails can remain dangerous for days after heavy rain subsides.

Hikers are advised to avoid trails unless they are certain conditions are safe and to turn around if they encounter hazardous terrain.
