HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – More than 100 displaced and stray pets have been taken into the Hawaiian Humane Society since Saturday as Lala battered the state with heavy rain, flooding and wind.

The society said it is asking for the community’s help in managing the influx of displaced and stray pets.
It’s a number that continues to climb as Oahu families continue to recover and reunite with separated animals, Hawaiian Humane said.
If you’ve lost a pet
“Microchipping is the number one way your pet will get back to you if [a pet is] lost,” said Brandy Shimabukuro with Hawaiian Humane Society. “I don’t think one in three people realize one in three pets will get lost in their lifetime because of circumstances or things outside of your control.”

If you found a pet
The Humane Society said that most stray pets are not homeless and are someone’s missing family member, usually lost close to home. A home can be easier on a scared animal than a shelter, and keeps them near the neighborhood.

“If you have found a pet that’s out stray right now, we’re asking folks, if you’re able to temporarily take care of them, file a found pet report with us, we will work to reunite the pet with their family if they’ve got one looking for them,” Shimabukuro said.
The Hawaiian Humane Society said it is continuing to accept animals, but with so many coming in, it requires using emergency measures such as temporary pop-up crates, which they said are neither ideal nor sustainable.
They added that the strain is not only a matter of space, but with full kennels and more pets arriving, staff and volunteers also have less time for each animal.
