LIST: Hawaii Island, Oahu public school closures for Tuesday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education will resume normal operations at most public schools statewide on Tuesday, Aug. 18, following Hurricane Lala.

All public schools on Kauaʻi, Maui, Molokai, and Lānaʻi will reopen to both students and staff Tuesday.

However, key exceptions remain across Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu as crews continue to address storm-related health and safety issues, utility service and other conditions affecting campus operations.

For Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island, HIDOE has announced specific campus closures for students, employees, or both as recovery efforts continue.

Hawaiʻi Island

All Hawaiʻi Island public schools will remain closed to students Tuesday. School employees are required to report to work to prepare for reopening unless their campus is specifically closed to both students and staff.

The following Hawaiʻi Island schools are closed to both students and staff Tuesday:

Previously announced extended closures for both students and staff remain in effect through Thursday, Aug. 20, for:

Department of Education officials previously cited storm-related impacts to Nāʻālehu Elementary classrooms and campus facilities, as well as nearby road closures that prevent safe access to the school.

All public schools statewide are already scheduled to be closed on Friday, Aug. 21, in observance of Statehood Day. This means both Nāʻālehu Elementary and Kaʻū High & Pāhala Elementary will remain closed for the entirety of the school week.

Oʻahu

The majority of Oʻahu public schools will reopen to students and staff Tuesday. However, several campuses face continued disruptions and are closed to both students and staff Tuesday:

The department says if power is restored and conditions allow, these schools may reopen, and families and staff will be notified directly of any changes.

The following Oʻahu schools are closed to students only. Staff will report to work to continue preparations for reopening:

Honolulu/East Oʻahu

Windward Oʻahu

Central Oʻahu

West Oʻahu

Families at schools that remain closed to students will receive updates regarding instructional plans and reopening timelines directly from their schools, the department said.

University of Hawaiʻi campuses

The University of Hawaiʻi system said all UH campuses and facilities will be open for normal operations on Tuesday, with some exceptions on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu.

Hawaiʻi Community College and UH Hilo will remain closed, though Student Housing Move-In Day for UH Hilo students will proceed as scheduled.

Additionally, the Kō Education Center on Hawaiʻi Island and the Waiʻanae Moku Education Center on Oʻahu remain closed due to ongoing power outages.

Students and employees at the affected locations are asked to monitor their hawaii.edu email accounts for campus-specific updates and instructions.

The first day of the fall semester for the UH system remains scheduled for Monday, Aug. 24.
