HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – All state offices, public schools, and court facilities across the islands will be closed on Monday, Aug. 17, due to severe storm impacts from Lala, which passed south of Hawaii as a hurricane and tropical storm.

The closure affects all Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) schools, public charter schools, and state Judiciary facilities.

The state said in a joint news release that all county offices will also be closed.

Non-essential state employees affected by the closures are granted administrative leave and should not report to work.

Critical personnel — including disaster coordinators, emergency response workers, hospital staff, correctional officers, and infrastructure support workers — are still required to report for duty or perform remote work as assigned.

Education officials cited storm-related damage and nearby road closures that continue to prevent safe access to the campus.
