First Alert Forecast: Hurricane Warning posted for Hawaii Island, Tropical Storm Watch posted for Maui County

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Big Island and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Maui County. Increased trade winds, combined with relatively dry conditions, will elevate the fire weather threat through Friday. Occasional showers will favor windward and mauka areas through Friday. For the weekend, we are continuing to monitor Tropical Storm Lala as it moves west-northwest towards the main Hawaiian Islands. Rainfall totals for the Big Island and parts of Maui of 8 to 12 inches are expected, with isolated areas on the windward Big Island possibly receiving more than 20 inches. Rainfall totals up to 8 inches possible across the remainder of the island chain.

An XL E/SE swell produced by Lala will begin picking up today through the weekend. The south swell will drop below advisory levels starting today.
