First Alert Forecast: Increased showers possible Sunday for parts of the state

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Clouds and showers are expected for windward and mauka areas, with a higher chance of showers for the islands of Hawaii and Maui as a plume of moisture passes just south of the islands Sunday and Monday. Some of the showers could also make their way to Molokai and Oahu Sunday. Drier conditions are expected midweek.

There’s a First Alert as we track several disturbances in the tropical Pacific. The National Hurricane Center is tracking a tropical wave about 1,400 east-southeast of the state with an 80% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone. It is far too early to say how it will impact the islands, but we will keep a close watch on it.

Small south-southwest swells will bring average surf to south shores, with a larger swell that could push waves into high surf advisory territory late Wednesday through Friday.

There could be an increase in waves for east shores, depending on the potential tropical cyclone development mentioned earlier. North shores will remain mostly flat, with some of the southwest swell energy reaching exposed west shores.
