First Alert Forecast:Trades slow down and a few more trade showers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Trade winds will stay on the lighter side through Friday before picking up again this weekend. With the lighter winds, we’ll continue to see afternoon clouds and a few showers develop over interior and leeward areas, especially on Kauai and Oahu where an upper-level low is adding a little extra instability to the atmosphere.

Windward and mountain areas will still see passing trade wind showers, but the western half of the state has the best chance for a few enhanced showers over the next couple of days. As the upper-level system moves away on Friday, our weather should become a bit more stable.

Looking ahead to the weekend, trade winds will strengthen, helping to reduce those afternoon sea breeze clouds. At the same time, forecast models show a plume of tropical moisture passing near or over Maui and the Big Island, which could bring an increase in showers for the eastern end of the state.

For boaters, moderate trade winds will continue through much of the week with no Small Craft Advisories expected. Winds increase to breezy levels by the weekend.

Surf remains fairly quiet overall. East shore surf will gradually ease as the leftover swell from former Tropical Cyclone Genevieve fades. South shore surf stays below average through the rest of the week, but a small long-period south swell arrives Saturday, with additional swells expected next week that could bring surf back to near or slightly above typical summer levels.

North shores will remain nearly flat.

Overall, expect light trades, warm afternoons with a few interior showers through Friday, then a return to breezier trade winds this weekend. Keep an eye on Maui and the Big Island, where tropical moisture could bring wetter conditions as we head into Saturday and Sunday.
