According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture.
A tsunami alert was issued for waves up to 1 meter (about 3 feet), Reuters reported.

The quake registered the highest possible intensity of 7 on Japan’s Shindo seismic scale, according to the meteorological agency.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii or American Samoa.
