Former Oahu resident describes Seattle shooting: ‘I’ve never been so scared’

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow/AP) – A former Oahu resident was at a crowded food festival Sunday at the Seattle Center that turned deadly when shots were fired into the crowd.

Isaiah Corpus, 26, was manning his booth at the annual Bite of Seattle festival when gunshots rang out at around 6 p.m. Seattle time.

Officials said three people died and four others were wounded.

Seattle police said one suspect has been arrested, and they are searchingfor another.

Corpus was just a few stalls away from where the shooting started.

“I’ve never been so scared up until today,” he said. “It sounded like fireworks for a split second, and I just started seeing people running, screaming, people yelling.”

Corpus said he saw people getting shot and falling to the ground as he and his partner ran for safety.

“I’m trying to hold on to his hand and keep running as much as possible, seeing people getting [trampled] over, people falling, jumping over fences,” he said.

He recounted seeing lots of children running to their parents.

Corpus recently launched his business and was attending the event for the first time as a vendor, having attended the event as a guest last year.

Although there were Seattle police and private security, he said “it didn’t feel like it was enough.”

“[I] just really wish gun control was really put into more effect and wish there was more security at this event,” he said.

Corpus added that regardless of age, no one is prepared to deal with that kind of chaos.

“It puts me at a spot where now I’m scared to then from today on, I’m just scared to [vend] elsewhere now, knowing I don’t know if there’s going to be a situation like this. It’s going to happen the next time I go to an event,” he said.

An investigation is still ongoing.
