Evacuations ordered for Kawaihae Village due to wildfire

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – Evacuations have been ordered for the Kawaihae Village Subdivision due to a wildfire.

The Hawaii Fire Department reported the wildfire at around 6 p.m.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency (HCCDA) issued the evacuation alert at around 7:45 p.m.

Officials advise the public to evacuate east on Kawaihae Road to Waimea.

A shelter is open at the Waimea Community Center.

HCCDA said Kawaihae Road, from Queen Kaahumanu intersection to Waiaka Bridge in Waimea, is closed.

At about 7:20 p.m., officials said Kohala Mountain, Waikoloa and Akoni Pule roads are open to local traffic only.

Hawaii Island police advised using Waikoloa Road as an alternate route.

Officials advise drivers to expect traffic delays and to avoid the area when possible.
