HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Breezy to locally windy trades are expected through Friday, then moderate to breezy trades will persist through the weekend and deliver periodic showers to windward and mountain areas. Tropical Cyclone Fausto (or its remnants) may impact the state towards the middle of next week, but it`s a little early to determine potential impacts.

For today, expect typical Hawaii weather with sunny and cloudy skies mixed together. The wind will be steady and breezy trade winds; — drier than usual, conditions which means you’ll see fewer showers. You might get a quick shower early in the morning or overnight, but nothing major to worry about.

This weekend, the winds will actually calm down a bit and become more moderate — still breezy, but not as intense as this week. The same dry pattern continues, so expect mostly sunny skies with some clouds. Again, there might be a few light showers early in the morning or overnight, but overall it’ll be pretty nice weather.

Here’s where it gets tricky with next week. Hurricane Fausto is out in the Pacific, and we need to keep an eye on it. Right now, the National Hurricane Center thinks it will weaken as it moves toward Hawaii because the water will get cooler and the atmospheric conditions won’t be favorable for a strong storm. It’s too early to say if Fausto will directly affect Hawaii with heavy rain or strong winds, but we are pretty confident that the east-facing shores will get some decent waves late this weekend into early next week. The best thing you can do is keep checking the weather updates as we get closer to next week — we are tracking Fausto here at your First Alert Weather station.

Big waves are coming to the south-facing shores and will stick around through today, so expect the biggest waves of this cycle. There might be a brief break Friday night when the waves get a little smaller, but don’t get too excited — another set of big waves is heading in for Saturday that could bring the advisory level back. Either way, we could see this High Surf Advisory extend into the weekend. There will also be a south shore wrap around to the West side. The good news? The next batch of waves won’t be quite as intense as what we’re seeing now, and the waves will gradually calm down through next week. This should be good waves for the Honua Finals: The World Cup of Interscholastic Surfing

The east-facing shores are going to stay rough and choppy through the weekend. This is happening because of strong trade winds mixed with waves from the remains of former Tropical Cyclone Elida. Those Elida waves will fade away by Friday, but the trade wind waves will keep going. Here’s the bigger concern: Hurricane Fausto is generating larger waves that could hit the east-facing beaches by late Sunday into early next week — and these could reach advisory level too.

Good news if you’re on the north side! The waves will stay flat and tiny through the weekend, so it’ll be pretty calm over there.
