Community invited to ‘Adopt-A-Polyp’ for Waikiki Aquarium

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The public is invited to help the Waikiki Aquarium through its Adopt-A-Polyp campaign.

The Friends of the Waikiki Aquarium, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the aquarium, launched the fundraiser Thursday.

The money from the campaign will go toward rebuilding the aquarium’s Edge of the Reef exhibit, as well as supporting its ongoing coral conservation, research, and educational programs.

The Edge of the Reef is an outdoor exhibit where visitors can see species of corals native to Hawaii, such as rice, mound, and cauliflower corals.

Donors will receive commemorative stickers representing their adoption level and other gifts for donors who give more.

“The Adopt-A-Polyp Campaign gives everyone, from individual supporters to corporate partners, an opportunity to support the reimagined exhibit and the conservation efforts that inspire greater appreciation for Hawaii’s coral species,” said Charlee Martin, who serves as the interim executive director of Friends of the Waikiki Aquarium.

Donors can choose from the following adoption tiers:

Donors will also receive quarterly updates with videos and photos of coral growth, articles from the aquarium’s coral team, and updates on the Edge of the Reef exhibit rebuild.

“Coral reefs are some of the ocean’s most important and fragile ecosystems,” Martin said.
