Hiker airlifted from Makamakaole Gulch

KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Maui firefighters airlifted a hiker from the Makamakaole Gulch trail, also known as 13 crossings, Thursday morning.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m., rescuers were called to help a 30-year-old man who fell and injured his ankle, leaving him unable to hike out.

Firefighters located the hiker in a riverbed about half of a mile mauka, or inland, of Kahekili Highway.

Crews in the air and on the ground secured and lifted the hiker out of the gulch.

He was taken to the Waihee ballfield, where EMS took over care.
