HPD says officer discharged firearm at ‘large pit bull’ in Kalaeloa

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Police Department said an officer fired at “a large pit bull” during an operation Wednesday.

The incident happened at around 6:35 p.m. in the Kalaeloa area.

According to police, a large pit bull emerged from nearby brush and charged toward one of the officers. Fearing for his safety, the officer discharged his department-issued firearm at the dog multiple times.

HPD said the dog turned around and fled and was later found dead. The Hawaiian Humane Society was then contacted to assist.

Police said they searched the surrounding area after the incident. No one was injured, and no property was damaged.

HPD said in a statement that it recognizes that the loss of an animal is unfortunate and that the discharging of the firearm will be reviewed in accordance with department policy.
