One of two arrested in Holualoa stabbing case released after charges dismissed

KAILUA-KONA (HawaiiNewsNow) – One of two men arrested in connection with a stabbing in Holualoa on Saturday has been released.

In court Wednesday, prosecutors said they received new information about the case and moved to dismiss the charges against Brayan Urzua, 27, without prejudice, meaning prosecutors can still refile in the future.

The incident took place shortly before 11 p.m. at Kona Imin Center. Patrol officers responded to reports of a weapons incident and determined that a fight broke out after a graduation party.

Police said two men were stabbed with a knife: a 41-year-old Kailua-Kona man was stabbed in the left thigh and treated by medics at the scene, and 39-year-old Holualoa man was stabbed in the left hip, which penetrated his pelvic region and caused internal damage and significant blood loss.

Police said the second victim was transported to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition and was later flown to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for further treatment.

Police previously said Brandon Urzua was identified as the suspect who allegedly stabbed the men, and Brayan Urzua was identified as an alleged accomplice.

Brandon Urzua was charged Monday with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault.

During his court appearance Wednesday, a judge denied his attorney’s request to reduce his $1.1 million bail. He was scheduled to return to court Aug. 3.

Two other men who were reportedly involved in the fight were arrested and released pending further investigation.
