UH reaches agreement with Manoa Lab School

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The University of Hawaiʻi has reached an agreement with University Laboratory School, allowing it to continue operating on the UH Manoa campus through June 30, 2029.

The facilities use and occupancy agreement includes an option to extend for an additional five years, according to the university.

Under the agreement, ULS won’t be charged standard rental fees for land and facilities as the school transitions to covering its direct operating expenses, including utilities, internet and custodial services.

Those expenses were previously subsidized by the university. They will be phased in over three years: 50% in the first year, 75% in the second year and 100% in the third year.

“The University Laboratory School has been an integral part of the University of Hawaiʻi since 1931, serving as both a laboratory for educational innovation and an important member of our university community,” UH President Wendy Hensel said in a news release. “This agreement demonstrates that we can be responsible stewards of university resources while strengthening a partnership that benefits students, educators and our broader community.”

A separate agreement is expected to expand academic collaboration between the lab school and UH Mānoa’s College of Education in the future.

“We look forward to building on this relationship in the years ahead through our shared commitment to our students, our communities, and advancing education and research in service to the people of Hawaiʻi,” ULS Principal A. Keoni Jeremiah said.
