The Navy is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement on the potential effects of stationing up to nine Medium Landing Ship-class vessels at the base.
The proposal also calls for demolishing an existing wharf on Ford Island and building a new berthing wharf and roll-on/roll-off facilities to support the ships.
The vessels are designed to move troops, vehicles and equipment directly to shore and would support Marine littoral operations across the Pacific, the Navy said.
