City project gets national recognition for energy innovation
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A project that upgraded 49 city parks and gardens throughout Oahu is getting national recognition.

The City and County of Honolulu and contractor NORESCO were given the 2026 “Energy Leader Award” by Environment+Energy in the energy innovation category.
Improvements made under the contract include renovations to the Pearl City District Park Pool, the installation of new showers at Ala Moana Beach Park, and LED lighting adjustments at Sandy Beach Park to accommodate nesting sea turtles.

The City says it cut electricity use by 4 million kilowatt-hours and conserved 210 million gallons of water in the first contract year, resulting in $3.5 million in utility savings.
The Energy Savings Performance Contract continues for a total of 20 years. The City expects to see total savings of $94 million during that time.
