H-1 Freeway to close for overnight bridge work

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Part of the H-1 Freeway will be fully closed to traffic this weekend while crews work on the Gulick Avenue overpass.

According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the upcoming closure will run between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp for an overnight length of time on Saturday, July 11.

Crews will be deploying a temporary pedestrian bridge while they begin the demolition and reconstruction of the Gulick Avenue overpass.

From 8 p.m. Saturday, to 8 a.m. Sunday, H-1 will be fully closed in that area to complete the bridge.

Crews will be using heavy equipment and rollers to push the bridge from the makai base to the mauka base. 

The following ramps will be closed during this work:

Eastbound motorists will be detoured via Middle Street to parallel roadways, like North King Street, Dillingham Boulevard, or North School Street.

Westbound motorists will be detoured via the Likelike Highway off-ramp to parallel roadways, like Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street.

The detours will lead back to H-1 after the construction zone.

The estimated completion date for the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is February 2028, weather permitting.

The temporary bridge will be partially launched over the eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway on the evening of Monday, July 6, which will only cause a partial closure of the roadway.

Two right lanes on the eastbound H-1 Freeway, between the Ola Lane overpass and the Likelike Highway off-ramp, will be closed from 9 p.m. Monday to 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
