Police open negligent homicide investigation following hit-and-run

HAWAII ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii Island police are looking for the driver or drivers involved in a deadly hit-and-run in Keaau.

Officers responded around 10:50 p.m. Friday after reports of a man lying in the roadway on Highway 130 near Orchidland Drive.

Investigators say the unidentified man was struck multiple times by unknown vehicles that left the scene.

Police believe he may have been trying to cross Highway 130 outside a marked crosswalk. He was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered.

The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit has opened a negligent homicide investigation and is asking anyone with information to call police. Failure to render aid in a fatal crash is a Class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The death is the 12th traffic fatality on Hawaii Island this year.
