KPD alerts public about text messaging scam

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Kauai Police Department is warning the public about a text messaging scam that claims recipients have an unpaid traffic citation.

Messages include a web link and urge customers to click it to resolve the issue.

The texts appear to originate from a named officer but KPD says they are not legitimate.

KPD will never ask for payments for fines or legal matters, the department said in a press release. All official communication from the courts will be sent by mail, the department said.

“Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant,” the press release reads. “Do not share personal or financial information with unknown phone numbers.”

If you get a suspicious message claiming to come from the department you can call KPD directly at (808) 241-1711.
