Emergency repairs to begin on storm-damaged Tantalus Drive section

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Emergency repairs are set to begin next month on a section of Tantalus Drive damaged during the March Kona Low storm.

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction said work will start July 6 near 2369 and 2375 Tantalus Dr. Officials said the project will reconstruct a damaged shoulder and restore full access to the two-lane roadway.

Construction is expected to take about four months, with work scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., excluding holidays.

The repairs will include retaining walls, guardrails, drainage improvements, erosion control measures, fencing and other roadway infrastructure.

During construction, traffic through the work zone will be reduced to a contra-flow pattern. City officials said the contractor will coordinate access for residents, deliveries, trash collection and emergency services.

Motorists should expect lane closures and delays and are encouraged to allow extra travel time when traveling through the area.
