More than 10,000 corals have now been restored on Oahu’s Waianae Coast.

Kuleana Coral Restoration reached the achievement recently after six years of hands-on work that included scientific monitoring, coral out-planting, and direct repair or reattachment of corals across multiple sites.

“Ten thousand corals is a milestone, not a finish line.” said Co-Founder and Executive Director Alika Garcia. “The last six years were about learning what works here; now we’re applying those lessons through stronger partnerships and local leadership.”

This summer, Kuleana Coral Restoration plans to install two coral nursery tables in the same area.

They will serve as working nurseries for growing corals and as living classrooms to support youth engagement and the next generation of reef stewards.

“Thousands of people have contributed their time, knowledge, and care, creating a shared commitment to protecting our reefs that will last well into the future,” said Chief Operations Officer Blake Nowack.
