Kona Coffee Purveyors is celebrating one of the most decadent pastries in the world, which originated from Brittany, France. Its name comes from the Breton phrase that translates to “butter cake,” because the rich pastry is made of more than 50% butter. A traditional croissant is about 25-30% butter.

With June 20 marking Kouign-Amann Day, Shaina Manring and head baker Kelly Teramoto of Kona Coffee Purveyors joined HNN’s Sunrise to tell us about their specials.

“A Kouign-Amann is a rich, round, and crispy Breton pastry,” Teramoto said. “We are offering nine flavors: Peach Oolong, Brown Sugar Milk Tea, Mango Coconut Grapefruit, Kona Coffee Black Sesame, Red Bean Taro, Strawberry/Jasmine Tea/Cream Cheese, Ube Overload, Lilikoi Matcha, and Chocolate Milo.”

To skip the long lines, customers are urged to use the pre-order system on konacoffeepurveyors.com. Each kouign-amann is $6. Or pre-order a sampler set of all nine flavors for a special price of $49 and get a complimentary cup of drip Kona coffee.

Pre-orders will be accepted until June 15.

“Founded in 2008 by Raymond Suiter, Kona Coffee Purveyors is an artisanal Kona coffee roaster that crafts the finest Kona coffee with a deep reverence to its place of origin,” Manring said. “The coffee beans are hand-harvested from single estates on the Big Island and roasted to extract their natural sweetness, vibrance, and full-bodied flavors.”

The pastries are a collaboration with San Francisco’s b. patisserie, known for James Beard Award-winning bakers Belinda Leong and Michel Suas’ award-winning version with a balance of a crunchy, caramelized exterior and a soft, flaky, buttery center.

The bakery is located on the first floor of the International Market Place, 2330 Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki, and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. One hour of validation for self parking in International Market Place with purchase.
