FEMA approves funding for Hawaii disaster recovery, flood mitigation projects
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – FEMA has approved new federal funding to support disaster recovery and reduce future flood risk in Hawaii.

The agency announced Wednesday that more than $2.2 million was approved for projects in Hawaii and Arizona through its Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs.
Of that total, nearly $200,000 was awarded to Hawaii to help cover costs associated with the March Kona Low storms.FEMA also approved nearly $1.2 million for the development of a flood forecasting system in Hawaii.

The system will monitor streamflow and water levels using historical rainfall, streamflow and gauge height data to improve flood prediction accuracy.
FEMA said the grants are distributed through state and local governments, which determine how the funding is used to support their communities.
