Police said officers responded around 5:27 a.m. to the scene on Hāna Highway near Hoʻokipa Beach.
According to a preliminary investigation, police said a 46-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman from Haʻikū were confronted by an unknown man armed with a handgun who demanded their vehicle.
Police said both victims were struck by projectiles believed to have been discharged from the weapon before the suspect fled in the victims’ vehicle.

Medics treated and released both victims at the scene, police said.
Using vehicle-tracking information, officers located the stolen vehicle shortly afterward in the Haʻikū area, police said. An MPD drone was deployed and identified the stolen vehicle along with a second vehicle believed to be associated with the incident.
Police said both vehicles attempted to flee as officers approached, but they were later abandoned on a nearby roadway. The occupants then fled on foot into surrounding brush and pastureland.
Patrol officers, the K-9 unit and members of the MPD Air Unit aboard Hekili searched the area, but the suspects were not located, police said.
