Maui man dies after crashing into school bus
WAIKAPU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Maui man died Thursday after he crashed into the rear of a school bus on Kuihelani Highway in Waikapu.

The incident occurred at about 6 a.m. near the intersection of East Waiko Road.
The 27-year-old victim was driving south in a gray 2015 Nissan Versa approaching the intersection when he failed to slow for traffic, said police.
He crashed into the bus and became pinned under the vehicle.
The man sustained critical, life-threatening injuries, said police. Paramedics treated and transported him to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where authorities said he later succumbed to his injuries.
The 61-year-old woman driving the bus was not injured. Police say she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The victim’s identity is withheld to allow his family to notify their extended family and friends of his death. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, said investigators.
Police have not determined if speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the incident.
This marks Maui County’s second traffic fatality in 2026, compared to nine at the same time last year.
