Kade Smith, 36, made his initial appearance in Hilo District Court on Monday. Over prosecutors’ objections, the judge lowered his bail from $553,050 to $350,000.

Smith was charged with five offenses, including manslaughter, first-degree negligent homicide, operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, driving with a license canceled, suspended or revoked, and no no-fault insurance.

The charges stem from a June 3 collision on Kahakai Boulevard. Police said Smith was attempting to turn left onto Niuhi Street when his vehicle collided with a motorcycle operated by 30-year-old Korey Palmerton.

Palmerton was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he later died.

Prosecutors allege Smith was under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash.

Smith is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on June 10.

The charges are allegations, and Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
