Marine mammal death prompts closure of Hanauma Bay beach

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was closed to beachgoers after a marine mammal washed ashore and later died.

Officials said the beach was closed out of an abundance of caution after the incident resulted in a significant amount of blood in the water.

The upper viewing areas at the preserve remain open.

Hanauma Bay officials said they are working with state, federal and Ocean Safety agencies following the incident.
