{"id":986,"date":"2026-06-05T11:36:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T11:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=986"},"modified":"2026-06-05T11:36:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T11:36:01","slug":"pahoa-man-arrested-for-negligent-homicide-after-deadly-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=986","title":{"rendered":"Pahoa man arrested for negligent homicide after deadly crash"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<section>\n<p>HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; A motorcycle driver was killed in a collision in Pahoa Wednesday evening. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=984\">Vassilis Syrmos approved as next chancellor of UH Manoa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hawaii Island police identified the victim as Korey Palmerton, 30, of Pahoa, as the man killed in the crash on Kahakai Boulevard.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly before 5:30 p.m., where they found Palmerton unresponsive.<\/p>\n<p>He was taken to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>According to initial police reports, Palmerton was traveling west on Kahakai Boulevard, near Niuhi Street, when a Toyota Camry traveling east allegedly attempted to make a left turn onto Niuhi Street. <\/p>\n<p>Police say the motorcycle then struck the sedan. <\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old sedan driver was not injured. <\/p>\n<p>He was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, First-degree negligent homicide, and for not having car insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=982\">Hawaii Supreme Court hears arguments on DUI field sobriety test refusals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also faces a charge of operating a motor vehicle after license suspended or revoked for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, meaning this is likely not his first alleged infraction. <\/p>\n<p>He is in custody at the Hilo Police Station, pending further investigation. <\/p>\n<p>Police say they do believe speed, alcohol and\/or drugs, as well as inattention, were factors in the cause of the crash. <\/p>\n<p>Palmerton was not wearing a helmet at the time, according to police. <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>An autopsy has been ordered to determine his exact cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>Officers interviewed several witnesses at the scene and are continuing to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact Officer Jerome Duarte at (808) 961-2339 or via email at Jerome.Duarte@hawaiipolice.gov . <\/p>\n<p>Tipsters may also call the department\u2019s non-emergency line at (808) 935-3311.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 14th traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 13 at the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimovinginsider.com\/?p=980\">FBI warns AI is making scams harder to spot \u2014 and Hawaii is paying the price<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Korey Palmerton, 30, of Pahoa, was killed in a collision in Pahoa Wednesday evening, when his motorcycle collided with a car. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":985,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-986","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
