HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Incoming Honolulu Police Chief David Lazar appeared virtually at the Honolulu Police Commission meeting Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Exactly two weeks ago, the commission chose Lazar to be the department\u2019s next chief.<\/p>\n

He said preparations to move to the islands have been going very well.<\/p>\n

Lazar is in California now but will arrive on Oahu on June 14.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

On Monday, June 15, he will be considered a \u201cvolunteer\u201d with the Honolulu Police Department, learning the ropes, meeting people, and preparing to be officially onboarded.<\/p>\n

He cannot officially step into his role as chief until his background check clears and he passes physical exams.<\/p>\n

But Lazar told commissioners he\u2019s ready to start the process and is aiming for a swearing-in ceremony set for early July.<\/p>\n

Among some of his preparations is learning how to lead a department in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

\u201cAssistant Chief Nishibun has scheduled me for leadership training,\u201d Lazar said. \u201cThere\u2019s a popular course titled Leadership Island style for newcomers\u2026 I\u2019m excited about it.”<\/p>\n

The online leadership course is five hours, and the incoming chief will take it live on Zoom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been staying up with the department through media and social media,\u201d he added. \u201cI\u2019ve been attending community events and meetings with the community and my soon-to-be former city to say goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lazar said he\u2019s already been introduced to and is meeting with key stakeholders in the city, including council members, other county chiefs, and even federal partners like the FBI.<\/p>\n

The chief elect also told commissioners that he is waiting to hear back on a rental unit application for living accommodations within a mile of HPD headquarters.<\/p>\n
