HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Happy first day of June and it is the official start to Hurricane season. And there are two tropical disturbances over the eastern pacific that may develop over open waters. Fortunately, they will likely not be a threat to land, but we will continue to keep a close eye on the tropical satellite in months ahead.<\/p>\n

After a stretch of fairly typical trade wind weather, Hawaii is heading into a wetter pattern for the next couple of days. A plume of tropical moisture moving in from the southeast is spreading across the islands, bringing an uptick in showers today and Tuesday. The wettest conditions will favor windward and mauka communities, but don\u2019t be surprised if a few showers make their way into leeward neighborhoods as well.<\/p>\n

Some of these showers could be briefly heavy, especially tonight into Tuesday. The Big Island is already seeing pockets of heavier rain, and localized ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas will be possible statewide as the moisture spreads westward up the island chain.<\/p>\n

Earlier today, an Ashfall Advisory remains in effect as Episode 48 of the K\u012blauea eruption continues. Because winds are blowing in different directions at different levels of the atmosphere, ashfall locations may change throughout the day, so residents near the volcano should stay aware of the latest updates. The alert has been taken down since the eruption this morning.<\/p>\n

For beachgoers and surfers, the biggest weather headline may actually be in the ocean. A fresh south-southwest swell is building and will push south shore surf back to advisory levels tonight and Tuesday. Wave heights are expected to peak around Wednesday, with some of the largest sets approaching warning-level surf at the most exposed south-facing shores.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, this wetter pattern won\u2019t last all week. The moisture plume gradually moves away Tuesday night, and a more familiar trade wind setup returns by Wednesday. That means showers becoming more focused on windward and mauka areas again, while breezier trade winds make a comeback through the second half of the week. Overall, expect a soggy start to the week followed by improving conditions and strengthening trades as we head toward the weekend.<\/p>\n
