HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A family-owned business that began during World War II is set to close its doors. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s go holoholo to Ted\u2019s Automotive Machine Shop in Kalihi.<\/p>\n

Inside Ted\u2019s Automotive Machine Shop in Kalihi, owner Craig Takeguchi points to a red machine in the corner and smiles at the memory. That spot, he said, used to be where his mother\u2019s desk sat \u2014 and where he rode his tricycle as a kid, weaving through the same workspace he now manages.<\/p>\n

Takeguchi owns and runs the family machine shop that his parents, Ted and Barbara Takeguchi, opened on Queen Emma Street in downtown Honolulu in 1944. With help from Takeguchi\u2019s uncle, the business later moved to its current location along Mokauea Street in 1958.<\/p>\n

Craig Takeguchi said his family\u2019s roots in Hawai\u02bbi go back generations. His father, Ted, grew up in \u02bbEwa, where Takeguchi\u2019s grandfather farmed. But Ted wasn\u2019t drawn to agricultural life, Craig said \u2014 he wanted something different, and he made his way to Honolulu to build a trade.<\/p>\n

Over the decades, Ted\u2019s Automotive became known for a specialized kind of work that many drivers don\u2019t often see, machining and refurbishing critical engine and vehicle components.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a component of a vehicle breaks down, they would remove it from the vehicle, and they would bring it here for us to do the machining,\u201d Takiguchi explained. \u201cThat\u2019s our job, a machine shop. So, we would refurbish whatever parts necessary, and they would take it back and repair a vehicle. It\u2019s like a specialization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Takeguchi officially joined the business in 1978 after graduating from business college with a marketing degree. He said his mother encouraged him to help \u2014 and he didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always had a passion for automotive anyway,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

After his uncle retired in 1993, Craig took on an even bigger role and expanded the operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s when I really went out, and I grew the business more,\u201d he said. \u201cI took all the risks. I purchased this property, built this building, and more than doubled the size.\u201d<\/p>\n

Customers say the shop\u2019s reputation has lasted for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, it\u2019s the best place,\u201d said Scott Murakami, who has been coming to Ted\u2019s Automotive Machine Shop since the 1980s. \u201cI mean, when you need machining done, this is the place to come to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murakami said he first connected with Takeguchi through motorsports.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re into drag racing and all kinds of motor sports,\u201d he said. \u201cSo got to know Craig over the years, and he\u2019s always helped us out a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, after more than 80 years in operation, Takeguchi said the shop is preparing to close for good \u2014 a decision that has been difficult for longtime customers and friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be sad,\u201d Takeguchi said. \u201cBut the most part I\u2019m gonna miss is the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murakami said that learning about the closure hit hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hurts,\u201d he said. \u201cI had lunch yesterday with friends, and I found out about it. So, I made time to come over and see how Craig is doing and kind of find out what happened. Yeah, it\u2019s shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for what comes next, Takeguchi said he\u2019s ready to prioritize his health and spend time with family \u2014 including on the pickleball court with his wife and traveling more.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also looking forward to a new role: grandpa.<\/p>\n

\u201cBabysit my kind of new grandson,\u201d he said. \u201cGrandson, his name is Theodore. Actually, my daughter named Theodore after my father, Ted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Takeguchi said Ted\u2019s Automotive Machine Shop\u2019s last day of operations will be Friday, May 22.<\/p>\n
