HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – U.S. Department of Education Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent was in Hawai\u02bbi this week as part of the department\u2019s national History Rocks! Trail to Independence Tour, held in celebration of America\u2019s upcoming 250th birthday.<\/p>\n

Civic education event at Mokulele Elementary<\/h1>\n

On Tuesday, Kent visited Mokulele Elementary, where 200 students took part in interactive games designed to deepen their understanding of American history and civics.<\/p>\n

Students received prizes through the History Rocks! initiative while exploring themes of civic engagement, patriotism and citizenship.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing just after Memorial Day, this event is also a chance for students to reflect on the sacrifice, duty, and love of country that have shaped our history,\u201d Kent said.<\/p>\n

UH M\u0101noa meeting, research tours<\/h1>\n

On Wednesday, Kent and members of his office met with University of Hawai\u02bbi president Wendy Hensel and other university leaders.<\/p>\n

They discussed UH\u2019s research, student success initiatives, workforce development efforts and higher education programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very excited to be here talking with the president and her leadership team about how we can, what are the opportunities for higher education in Hawaii and how they are so distinct from those on the mainland,\u201d Kent said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are trying together to make it the best environment it can be for student achievement, and wherever we can partner to make that happen, we are happy to do that and ready to go,\u201d Hensel said.<\/p>\n

The group toured the Hawai\u02bbi Space Flight Laboratory (HSFL) at UH M\u0101noa, where researchers at HSFL design, build, launch and operate small satellites for science and educational missions.<\/p>\n

They later visited the Hawai\u02bbi Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) on Moku o Lo\u02bbe, also known as Coconut Island in K\u0101ne\u02bbohe Bay.<\/p>\n

The institute is recognized internationally for research on coral reefs, marine ecosystems, climate resilience and ocean health.<\/p>\n
