HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Residents across Hawaii Island are continuing cleanup efforts after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake Friday night caused damage to homes, shifted structures off foundations and rattled communities across the state.<\/p>\n

Video sent to Hawaii News Now captured the violent shaking inside Randy\u2019s Huli Chicken and Ribs, where shelves crashed to the ground as people rushed for safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a hard jerk and then it sounded like a bomb went off,\u201d said Randy Morris, owner of the business.<\/p>\n

Morris said his warehouse sustained only minor damage, but his daughter\u2019s home suffered major structural damage after the quake shifted the house off its foundation.<\/p>\n

\u201cjust felt like I was on one of those carnival rides that like jerk your body,\u201d homeowner Asia Morris-Silsley said. \u201csounded like the whole house exploded.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the shaking intensified, Morris-Silsley said her main concern was getting her children out safely.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom tried to scoop me out of bed,\u201d said Jahnoa Sisley, Morris-Silsley\u2019s son. \u201cI fell into a crack in the deck and my legs slipped right through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deck split in half,\u201d Morris-Silsley said. \u201cThe house is on the ground. It jumped off of the foundation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other residents also reported damage from the force of the earthquake, including fallen water tanks, cracked flooring and shifted property.<\/p>\n

\u201cthe whole tank fell and hit the house and was dumping out the water,\u201d said Jacob, a Hawaii Island resident.<\/p>\n

Visitors staying on the island also described being caught off guard by the shaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came here for my birthday party, and it\u2019s starting already with a bang,\u201d said Tina, tourist from Sacramento, California.<\/p>\n

Back on Oahu, some residents reported feeling light shaking and vibrating windows, though conditions were far less severe than on Hawaii Island.<\/p>\n

As families continue recovering from the quake, Hawaii County officials say damage assessments are ongoing as crews respond to additional reports coming in from around the island.<\/p>\n
